Yesterday, I tagged along with Eric to a group photo shoot for the Long Beach Wedding Collective at the AVIA Hotel in Downtown Long Beach. It's tucked away amongst the shops and restaurants at The Pike near the parking structure. We've passed by on our way to the movie theatre have often wondered about it.

Now I know...and I was not disappointed. It was super cute!
My friend Samuel is thinking about having his birthday party there - they have a rooftop bar pool with cabanas and a fantastic bar stocked with all the essentials - of course. Click here for more photos from the Avia website.

Maker Mornings - Sat. May 15th

This past Saturday we held our May Maker Mornings brunch at my house. It was a delight!!

We had a slightly smaller group show this month due to finals and graduations. Congrats grads!!
Words will not suffice so I have provided you with photos -

I made a strawberry & blackberry pie. My first ever...and it was divine!

I also made jam twists (plate on the right below). I filled half with blackberry jam and the other with marmalade! D-LISH!

A brunch wouldn't be complete without a morning cocktail. Today's beverage was a refreshing sangria.

Ingredients:

- White Zin

- white grape juice

- fresh mango

- fresh strawberries

Mix ingredients and refrigerate for 30 mins to allow cooling and saturation of fruit. The long it soaks the sweeter it tastes!

And tea, naturally!

Now for some making!!

My friend Beth brought her 15 mo. old daughter Ruby along! Sweeter than pie, she is. Check out Beth's online shop, Salvage Life. Recently, Taylor Swift's wardrobe stylist has called on Beth to deck Taylor out in some Salvage Life duds for her tour. She loved the clothes so much she's asking for more - to wear around town! Go Beth!!

Breakfast

...is the most important meal of the day. It's during this time, where I'm not especially hungry, the process and the smell of a home-cooked meal in the morning entices my tummy and tantalizes my tongue.

Every morning, I try to eat an energizing breakfast to start the day off right - otherwise, I'll be sluggish and moody all day and won't probably get much done.

Here are some samples of a healthy breakfast (minus the iced latte)...
This egg is atop a toasted & buttered english muffin. Typically I choose toast, but it was moldy so I opted for the english muffin which was delightful as well.

And here is an example of my spec-ial-itay! CREPES!

In my family growing up, this was a weekend special. Mom would make them for me and friends who spent the night (who, I'm convinced, only spent the night knowing they'd get crepes for breakfast in the morning). They come complete with sprinkled powdered sugar and lemon. At our house, you roll them up like a burrito, sprinkle and squeeze once more, and then eat!

To help it go down, fresh squeezed orange juice from my husband's grandparent's backyard!

SO sweet! SO delicious!

Los Angeles, I'm Yours! Opening Party

Hi all!

WOW!! Ok! Let's catch back up on life. Here are some photos I took from the opening gallery party of the "Los Angeles I'm Yours" show and some from a couple days later (hence, the day light).

Throughout the week, I journeyed up to LA with Eric (otherwise it would have been a "husband who?" kinda week). I got to get to know the Ted and Angie from Poketo, and Bobby Solomon from Kitsune Noir, and landed a helping hand setting up the show when needed. Eric provided the display props - crates, spools, drawers for shelving, rugs/afgans, benches, Jesus with antlers, etc., and also was able to put a few pieces of his own in the show last minute. He had wanted to from the start but got so busy that it shifted in priority. His pieces are shown in some of the photos below - small frames with a two-toned background exhibiting some sort of person or thing, some potted succulents in mugs and other curio (like a TonkaTruck), and wood wedges with set of silver balls atop.

Umami Burger was the breakfast/lunch/dinner of choice. It's right across the courtyard from the gallery at Space15Twenty and it's super delish. If you like burgers, you'll LOVE these. My personal favorite is the Port & Stilton Burger.

Below are some photos from our little after-party after the opening. My husband and I and a couple of our friends (Dave, Scott, Jody, Charlie, Danny) who ventured up to LA to attend, shimmied down the block to Stout for some more beers and burgers (as if we hadn't had enough at that point - ha!)

POGO. His name is Nick Bertke - he's 21 years old and lives in Perth, Australia.

He take clips and snippets from films and creates amazing new songs/ music videos from the sounds in the movie.

Make sure you watch them all. They're all astounding!!! (again, please excuse blogger's editing capabilities - I see they have cut off the films I have posted - I hope this doesn't stop you from watching!)

Through a tangled inter-web search of some sort of inspiration that would ignite a flame under my tooshie, I stumbled upon this historic collection of American sheet music from Duke Universities Library from 1980-1920.

This one's a fav...

Amazing typography abounds!! I mean, there are some truly beautiful pieces in there. Kinda funny that we use Illustrator and other software these days to get this look when during those days, this was the norm.

My husband and I have been working on a few small projects in and around the house lately. We like to change the space up a bit every now and then to freshen things up.

As my mother-in-law stated recently,

"I love going to your house because I can sit on the couch and look around at all the new things you've done to your place. It's always an adventure!"

The backyard in particular has been my husband's project. He made us a picnic table!

Craft Brunch Bunch

There's no denying that spring has sprung.

This weekend was the official beginning of spring for me. I didn't blog last week because, to be completely honest, I didn't have it in me to sit in front of the computer when I could be outside enjoying the beauitful sunshiney days we've been having here.

A couple weeks ago, my close friend, Ruthi Auda, and I decided it was time to implement a monthly craft brunch. Appropriately, we named it the Craft Brunch Bunch.

On the menu this week:

*mimosas

*croissants from a local bakery

*homemade cinnamon rolls (thank you Ruthi!!)

*homemade lemon muffins w/ homemade blueberry drizzle (courtes de moi)

*peach & grapefruit slices covered in powdered sugar

I hosted the first meeting.

Paige worked on a necklace made from mixed media materials. So cute!

And I finished embroidering one panel of our curtains...

We had a really great time enjoying and getting to know one another, while working on our projects, drinking mimosas, and relaxing. It was wonderful!

a spring awakening for your taste buds

My husband and I have a habit of buying fruit with the intention of eating them before they go bad, however, often times, that is not the case. This is especially so with bananas. I hate bananas. I can only eat bananas if I put them in my cereal or if they're in bread form. In fact, it's pretty safe to say that I buy bananas so that I can make banana bread. As soon as they turn black, it's on!!

So, for those of you who are like me, you'll love this recipe. And if you LOVE bananas, then you'll REALLY love this recipe.

It goes like so...

Ingredients:

3 or 4 ripe bananas, smashed
1/3 cup melted butter
1 cup sugar (can easily reduce to 3/4 cup)
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, with a wooden spoon (no need for a mixer), mash the bananas, then blend in your butter in with the nanners. Mix in the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Then mix in the baking soda and salt. Add the flour last, and mix. Pour your mixture into a 4x8 greased loaf pan (I used butt'ah) and bake for 1 hour (I also sprinkle nutmeg atop my mixture before baking). Let cool.

By this time, your house should be filled with a delicious aroma of fresh banana loaf bread.

Spread honey, agave, or cream cheese on your bread and enjoy!

the Blarney about St. Patrick

What many people don't know about the patron Saint of Ireland is that he wasn't Irish at all. He was English, and was captured by Irish raiders after the Romans withdrew from the UK.

He spent over 10 years in captivity until he escaped and fled back to England. In a dream, he heard God tell him to return to Ireland to save them from their pagan celtic culture and convert them to Christianity. So he did.

The shamrock was said to be used by St. Patrick to help explain the Trinity. That may be blarney as well but it is quite possible he did.

And it wouldn't be St. Patty's without a little Irish folk music... (she really gets going towards the end!)

Last night's floral design class was St. Patty's inspired as well. Not a fan of the cheesy plastic pot but it's the spirit of the day that makes it fun...

I had dinner at a friend's house last week and was introduced to the most delicious salad dressing I think I've ever tasted! And get this...it was made only lime, honey, and a bit of canola oil! Maybe you've made this dressing or had it before but I've just discovered how delicious it is.

This dressing, oddly enough, ties in with this realization/confirmation that the simple things in life are the truest and the most important, and we continue to complicate things only to find that the simplest way of action, often times, is the best.

Hence, Honey-Lime Dressing via Lorrie Bostic's homecooked meal! Thank you Lorrie.

Here's how:

2 tablespoons honey

1/4 cup lime juice (about 2 or 3 limes)

1 tablespoon canola oil - optional

(the dressing is good enough without the oil but some people like to add it)

Add the ingredients into a jar with a twist-tight lid (or a dressing shaker) and shake the jar until the contents are mixed. Drizzle it over greens with a little feta cheese or ricotta and some grape tomatoes cut in half for a delicious tasting healthy snack or side to your meal.

3rd Annual Salton Sea Trip - 2010 Recap

Our annual Salton Sea trip was a success. About 20 of us camped under the stars. The New Camp campground location was closed due to state budget cuts but a mile down the road was another camping spot that we enjoyed just as well. In fact, every morning we awoke to views of the water and a beautiful hillscape.

Friday, we set up our campsites and chatted around the campfire until morning.
On Saturday, we ventured to Bombay Beach for the best burgers in town at the Ski Inn and then explored the little town and it's haunting environment. We continued down the road to Salvation Mountain to visit Leonard. On our way back to the campsite, a few of us stopped along the way to do some more exploring. We found an old abandoned warehouse where pigeons were flying all around inside and graffiti covered the walls. The boys found salvaged some scrap metal and iron, and Eric knocked off a rusted metal door in hopes of making a table out of it, but it ended up being too big to carry home along with our camping supplies. Sad realization. We went back to the site and as soon as the coals were hot, started preparing Hobo Stew - our traditional Saturday night camping meal complete with every veggie imaginable, seasoning, spices, beer, wine (for some added flavor - see my previous post for the video). After our bellies had been filled, we continued enjoying each other's company by the fire, and one-by-one slowly crept to bed in preparation to start the long journey back home the next day...

tuesday night excitement

Every Tuesday night for the month of March, I've enrolled myself to take a Floral Design class through the Long Beach Parks and Recreation program.
The gal who did the flowers for our wedding, Megan, posted a link of the list of classes on her website, Honey and Poppies, because the teacher just so happens to be her mom! Of course when I found this out, I signed up for the class immediately. I love their work and their style of floral design.

This week we made kitchen bouquets complete with kale and an apple! Throughout the year, you can add your own veggies to the mix, like artichokes and pumpkins!

My husband and I are in this mode of transformation with our home. We like the way it looks currently but think there are things we could do to make it really look great. Among a few other projects I'm working on comes a dainty little craft that is easy to do and can transform the look of a space instantly.

Do you have a collection of vases you don't know what to do with like I do? Here's an idea!

What you'll need:

Puffy Paint (any color will do - I had gold lying around)

Vases (I bought some from the local Assistance League for $.50 each)

Matte White Spray Paint

1) wash and dry vases thoroughly.

2) create your desired pattern on your vase with the puffy paint.

3) let dry (I used a hairdryer because I'm impatient)

4) spray paint evenly, making sure you don't apply too much in one area. if this happens, it will more than likely drip, or collect and crack.
5) reapply every few hours to ensure that the previous coat has dried fully.
6) ...and voila!

In all honesty, even though this project is very easy to accomplish, I found that keeping it from cracking and peeling was quite a challenge. I tried changing up the room temperature they were drying in and how I washed and dried them before starting. Once the conditions were laid out, it was clear sailing from there.

Hi again! It's been a while - I know. I haven't posted in anything in many many months, but now I'm working from home on a not-so-secret project (no - we're not having children) with my husband and I'm able to have more computer face-time. I'll be blogging more frequently to keep you all updated on the exciting adventures and projects I'll be coming up with daily. My husband and I have a slight fascination with succulents. It has been raining quite often here in Long Beach but the last few days have really brought out the beauty of spring a couple weeks early. Here are some photos I took of our flowering succulents from our backyard. (PS. I think my husband may have also posted his own photos of this very thing...) Enjoy -

I love the 2 photos above! In some of the pods you can see the flower's nectar pouring out as it opens to flower. I guess that's why they are called "succulents".

Since I was a child, I have always pointed out the things I thought were "perfect" or "ideal" by stating loudly, "MOM! This is the perfect [insert noun here]!" While eating a bowl of strawberries covered in powdered sugar, I'd hold up the strawberry with the most ideal shape and color - no imperfections. And I wouldn't eat that strawberry until it was the very last one in the bowl. I've done this my whole life with just about anything. Pumpkin Hunt

Our plan was to wake up early, eat a yummy breakfast, grab coffee and head up to San Luis Obispo for another year of our annual Pumpkin Hunt. But after a long night of hosting my fabulous birthday cocktail party (entitled: Black Dresses & Bowties), we were barely able to roll out of bed by 10:00am. We rushed to get ready and headed out after about 45 mins. After a brief coffee stop, we were on our way. Eric and I love driving together. When we know we have a long ride ahead of us, we begin conversations about the most interesting things. I always think that I know most everything there is to know about him...until long car trips, where I am pleasantly surprised by how much I don't know and how much I get to know throughout the course of our lives together. We knew for sure our first stop was in Summerland, just south of Santa Barbara. Home to the most amazing sandwich ever created at Stacky's Seaside. The sandwich is called Loon Point. It encompasses your basic delicious turkey sandwich accoutrements PLUS fabulously melted jack cheese and juicy chile relleno and peppercinis! (not to mention my favorite condiment: mayo!) Last I had this sandwich, I literally went home and dreamt about it. (that is no lie, my friends. it's sick, i know) After lunch, instead of heading all the way up to SLO for pun'kins, we turned back down the highway and pulled in to Pete's Pumpkin Patch. Our late start disabled us from taking our original trip, but as you can tell...made no difference! Pete's was a HIT! It was actually a pretty anxious experience because every pumpkin was picture perfect...except the green one above. Legend has it that all the pumpkins with warts turn into witches on Halloween night because no one wants them (I just made that up, but I believe it..) (those green pumpkins are actually alien baby pouches) The final selection... there are a few star pumpkins hiding behind the big'uns. I got two smaller bowl-like punks because I have a great recipe for pumpkin soup with the pumpkins as the bowl. So festive! We grabbed In N Out (a non-negotiable on day trips) and headed south. Stopped by a few small towns on our way and did some antique shopping (obviously!). Eric bought me a vintage birthday sweater - it fits me PERFECT and has the most amazing closures! A star item for my wardrobe and I haven't taken it off since!! (photo to come) Once home, we dec'd the house with bows of pumpkins (fa la la la la....okkk), put on our jammies, and watched telly until our eyes closed. Hopped into our warm bed and said "nighty night" with a kiss. A very enjoyable birthday indeed. Hope you enjoyed as well. xo

The Girl with Many Talents

starring, Ruthi Auda, a young twenty-something born and raised in Southern California with the talent and passion to making things. ruthi auda - maker/creater/artist/builder/photographer/baker/graphic designer/cardmaker/inspirer from birthday objects to her boyfriend,

...to baking tasty treats, to stationery/ graphic design...

to showing the world what she gets to do all day long...

...and TONS more, she's is one artistic gal - and a sweetheart to boot! Currently, she holds the position for Display Coordinator at Anthropologie in Newport Beach. You can see all the projects she's working on on her blog (along with her impeccable documentation and eye for composition - i guess that comes with the package, eh?) Her posts are so fun and interesting and creative. She's definitely an inspiration! What she does with her creativity and artistic talent motivates and inspires me to use my time wisely to make and learn and evolve in the art of doing. Ruthi and I met through my husband - they both were in the Art department at Biola University and over the past year, has become a beloved friend. In fact, she and her boyfriend came along on a family summer trip to Bass Lake for a few days.

And now she lives in LONG BEACH with the rest of us :) All that to say, Ruthi is great at what she does and I admire her for it. A real Jane of all trades :)

more like a journal entry than anything...

Something I've been thinking about lately is the ever-avoided "d" word = death. I've been thinking about it more along the lines of not taking this world and this life (the one life we are given) for granted. I think about the loved ones I've lost to disease...and the many that have survived!!! and how precious those people really are to me. I also just watched a documentary on the plane crash in the Hudson River this past January and how everyone on that plane was faced with death (TWICE) and survived! Praise be to God! At the end of the documentary, they all expressed a completely changed outlook on life and on loving people...all people, and never taking a single person for granted, even themselves. They don't feel limited to accomplish anything anymore. It's amazing! I want to live like that! I want to love like that! My husband has never experienced a loss in his life. He is 26 yrs old. He does not have a concept for losing someone or something close and dear to him on a "forever" basis, and the way in which he views life and pain and lose is quite different from mine. Something's missing from his view of the world and the people in it, heaven, hell, God, loss, and love. I, on the other hand, have lost loved ones and know what the pain is like. I don't have tattoos, but I imagine it being much like getting your first one. You know there's going to be pain but you don't know what that pain is going to feel like exactly, or how much it's going to hurt until they start drawing, and by that time, it's too late to tell the tattoo artist to stop. I find it interesting that day after day I wake up with something more to complain about. Something more to say "I want" or "I need", when all I need and want has been given to me - yet, for some reason, it's still not enough. This topic sounds elementary and so basic but it's been on my mind as of late in a very tangible way. Sometimes things like these come around again as a reminder that this life is temporary and to, flat out, make the most of it. To challenge your mind and your capabilities daily, to do things that scare you every once in a while (for me, that's going on rollercoaster with big DROPS!), to say "yes" at every opportunity, to do your best and work hard, and to love people in a deep way. Why? Because it's good for our soul. and it's good for others. and while we're all living on this earth together, we might as well make the most of what it has to offer. there is so much on this earth to experience and be a part of. I hope this has inspired you in some way. Writing this out has inspired me to work hard on my homework right now and do a good job (when it's the total absolute last thing on this planet I want to do!*with all due respect, mrs. craner:)* hehe ) xo

Alright folks! SEED People's Market is here! Owners of The Lab and The Camp property, Shaheen & Linda Sadeghi have given birth to yet another ingenious child - SEED! :) With a dedicated staff behind them working around the clock to complete projects, it's ready at last. But that doesn't mean it is finalized and complete. It is and will be ever-evolving, as things do naturally. That is, after all, the beauty of organic growth. What is SEED People's Market, you ask? I'll tell you: SEED is a retail collection of handmade, local, and eco-sustainable vendors that all sell goods on consignment under one roof (a roof growing grass, nonetheless!). Stores within a store, if you will. We also host a variety of classes at our store, featuring The Craft Kitchen's very own Nicole Stevenson, aka Random Nicole. Aside from our anchor Patagonia store, our line up varies from Visionary Boutique, Tiny Whales, The Green Life Co., African Red Tea, Life Aromatherapy, eVocal, Stephen Crout pottery, Symbiotic Form hair bows and hats, Fastenations jewelry, My Sparrow jewelry and vintage finds, Heirloom apparel, Chikabird/Randl paper goods, Betty Belts belts and jewelry made from sea glass and the like, Backward Prints plant-your-card cards, The Plant Stand, Tyler Bender Book Binding Co., Pretty Little Thieves art prints, delicious delicacies from Jenny Ross, owner of the raw food restaurant called 118 Degrees, also located at The Camp, and MORE!! My husband, Eric (www.etrine.com) is so creative and has been working really hard to push projects out before we launch SEED People's Market in Costa Mesa, CA on Saturday July 25th. Here are some of the projects he's done and some he's still working on. He just finished making a deck for the cafe area. I will post of photo of how that turns out shortly. He is, also, an exceptional DJ. Our dear friends Trevor and Kassi Gray just got married and Eric provided the vibes for their ceremony and reception. It was a BEAUTIFUL wedding. we attended yet another wedding this weekend - #2 in 2009.

This time, Eric's cousin Julia got married. The wedding was beautiful!! More photos from that weekend to come. In the meantime, here are some photos of me and my husband. check her out. isn't she the sweetest? her name is an isetta. she's a cabriolet model made actually from a refridgerator company. She has only 1 door, right in the front, with a sunroof on top (made for easy escape during a collision). And for those bright, sunny days, her soft back reverts into a convertible! Que magnifique!

The Swedish brother and sister duo are back at it again, except this time, this project is considered Karin Dreijer Andersson’s solo proejct. Her previous band, The Knife, hit it big with their pop electrco-digi sounds and unique vocals. Fever Ray, dabbles in the electro pop genre but has more of a ambient, ethereal appeal...and it's really great! Her self-titled debut album Fever Ray is out now. I highly recommend it!

growing up in a british household came the age old tradition of loving Punch & Judy, a puppet show typically shown on the beaches of england. here are a few there is debate that has gone on for decades about the violence portrayed in the puppet show. i don't see a problem and loved the show as a child and even still today. check it...
